The Odyssey

Odyssey Essay Identify three traits / values / mores of the ancient Greek hero that are evident in our friend Odysseus. 1 Front = Body 1 Trait 1 1 quotation from Odyssey 2 CM 1 quotation/ reference to contemporary American hero lit 2CM 2 Front = Body 3 Trait 3 1 quotation from Odyssey 2 CM 1 quotation/ reference to contemporary American hero lit 2CM 1 Back = Body 2 Trait 2 1 quotation from Odyssey 2 CM 1 quotation/ reference to contemporary American hero lit 2CM
16
Are these same traits / values / mores the same as those evident in heroes (or a hero) of the modern day? What might that say about heroes of ancient Greek vs. contemporary American culture? In your discussion, quote directly from the Odyssey (including internal citations) and reference specific instances in modern-day films or literature.

The Essay Workshopping the Introduction Great Resource: 12 Ways to Hook an Audience in 30 Seconds
18
Type of Hook Examples Quotation Anecdote Rhetorical question
- General Patton once said, “If a man does his best, what else is there?” - When Hillary Clinton said “we must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society,” she highlighted one of the biggest issues in American politics. Anecdote - There was nothing more isolating than being alone in a foreign country, with no cell phone, no money, and no ability to speak the language. - It was Christmas of 1995 when my parents taught me a valuable lesson: always expect the unexpected. Rhetorical question - Have you ever wondered what you would do if you couldn’t fail? - What’s the one thing you can do to make the world a better place? Interesting fact - China is going to spend $850 billion to clean up its water supply over the next decade. - Ancient Egyptians used heavy eye makeup to keep evil spirits at bay and to protect their eyes from infection. Simile or metaphor - When I first went to Japan, it was like a baby bird trying to fly for the first time. - The high rate of poverty in America is the country’s elephant in the room.

20
Intro Hook / Attention-Getting Device
Transition sentence mentioning title & author Thesis 3-5 sentences, ~ 50 words BUUUUUUTTTTTTTTT
21
Mr. Borman’s Awesome Intro
Longer than previous example Obviously . . . Better than previous example Attention-Getting Device = tell a story, include a part of a poem, make a startling statement, etc. Link = connect your AGD to the overall topic. What is the purpose of your story / poem / statement / etc.? Include title & author here. Thesis = State your argument or purpose CLEARLY and DECLARATIVELY in one sentence. This is the one sentence that tells the reader what your essay will cover. Statement of Significance = Why should your audience listen? Provide a warrant (facts / statistics) that proves this topic is important to all listeners. Road Map = Tell your audience where you will take them in your essay. How will it be organized (i.e., chronologically, topically, geographically, problem/cause/solution, etc.)?
22
Write your introduction:. make your first impression
Write your introduction: make your first impression . . .move from general to specific . . .invite the reader to “stay for more” Introduce your source (title in italics) and author.
23
The Essay Workshopping the Conclusion
24
Again, for this essay, mention both title and author.
VERY APPROPRIATE to apply to current political situation!!
25
47 & 48: Are heroes of ancient Greece the same as heroes of contemporary American culture? Look at your list of heroes (#31 in notebook). Why did you prioritize the way you did? Are important traits similar in any way to the characteristics of our friend Odysseus? Whether similar or diff, what does their/our value of certain traits (strength, intelligence, beauty, bravery, creativity, leadership, etc.) say about their/our cultural priorities? Could be your “so what” of conclusion
26
Conclusion Restate thesis Summarize main ideas
Extend / provoke thought 3-5 sentences, ~ 50 words BUUUUUUTTTTTTTTT
27
Mr. Borman’s Awesome Conc
Not terribly much diff than previous example maybe Longer than previous example Better than previous example Review = What did you cover in your essay and why? Re-State Thesis = What was the primary claim of your essay (what does it prove, what is its purpose)? AGD Callback / Mic Drop = Go back to your attention getting device, but look at it taking into account what we learned over the course of your essay. Does this make us interpret the story / info differently or better? Then, give the bigger picture: with this new info, how does the world / reader change? Leave us with hopeful or thought-provoking words of personal importance.
