It will soon be Christmas. But what is the modern Christmas? Nowadays it’s a feast dedicated to throat and accidie, two of the seven capital sins. So it is obvious that we have lost the real meaning of Christmas. Even though 2016 has been the year of the Jubilee in Rome with its theme of misericord, I don’t think we have rediscovered the true meaning of the word.

It will soon be Christmas. But what is the modern Christmas? Nowadays it’s a 1. feast dedicated to 2. throat and 3. accidie, two of the seven 4. capital sins. So it is obvious that we have lost the real meaning of Christmas. Even though 2016 has been the year of the 5. festa = festival or holiday (holiday = holy day)
2. gluttony or greed. Most English speakers don’t know the word accidie.
3. sloth (in the King James Version of the English Bible 1611), laziness, apathy

5. means giubileo but more frequently used to refer to an anniversary, particularly
of a monarch’s reign, e.g. the Diamond Jubilee of 1897 was the 60th anniversary
of Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne.
6. mercy, compassion, pity. Most English speakers don’t know the word misericord.
