1 TODAY IN ALGEBRA… STATs for Ch. 2 Test, pass back tests next week Ch. 3 PRE-Test Learning Goal: 3.1 You will solve 1-step equations using Algebra Independent Practice

2 NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO TOOK THE CH.2 TEST (33 pts)
HOW DID YOU “SHAPE” UP?? Results for ALL of my Algebra classes: GRADE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO TOOK THE CH.2 TEST (33 pts) 1ST PERIOD 6TH PERIOD TOTAL A/A- 4 B+/B/B- 8 2 10 C+/C/C- 3 7 D+/D F 12 22

3 CHAPTER 3 PRE-TEST You have the rest of class to complete your test.
Are you prepared? Pencil? No notes allowed. If you finish early: Finish any missing assignments. Work on something quietly as the rest of your fellow classmates complete their quizzes. NO TALKING. STAY IN YOUR SEATS. Turn in any missing or corrected assignments.

4 SUBTRACTION ADDTION DIVISION MULTIPLICATION RECIPROCAL
3.1 SOLVING ONE-STEP EQUATIONS INVERSE OPERATION: Two operations that undo each other. OPERATION INVERSE OPERATION ADDITION SUBTRACTION MULTIPLICATION DIVISION FRACTION SUBTRACTION ADDTION DIVISION MULTIPLICATION RECIPROCAL

5 3.1 SOLVING ONE-STEP EQUATIONS: USING ADDITION
KEEP YOUR EQUATION ALIGNED! Inverse of subtraction is addition! EXAMPLE 1: 𝑥−12=3 Add 12 to both sides of equal sign Add 3 and 𝒙=𝟏𝟓 CHECK YOUR ANSWER: 𝑥−12=3 Substitute 𝑥= −12=3 ??? Subtract 15 and =3 YES! TRY ON YOUR OWN: 1. 𝑡−5= −11=𝑏− =𝑤−7 𝒕=𝟏𝟐 −𝟐=𝒃 𝟏𝟑=𝒘 CHK: 12 −5=7 CHK: −11= −2 −9 CHK: 6= 13 −7

6 3.1 SOLVING ONE-STEP EQUATIONS: USING SUBTRACTION
KEEP YOUR EQUATION ALIGNED! Inverse of addition is subtraction! EXAMPLE 2: 𝑥+7=4 Subtract 7 from both sides of equal signs − 7 − 7 Add 4 and 𝒙=−𝟑 CHECK YOUR ANSWER: 𝑥+7=4 Substitute 𝑥=−3 −3 +7=4 ??? Add -3 and =4 YES! TRY ON YOUR OWN: 1. 𝑚+9= =7+𝑧 =9+ℎ − 9 − 9 𝒎=−𝟕 − 7 − 7 𝟔=𝒛 − 9 − 9 −𝟑=𝒉 CHK: −7 +9=2 CHK: 13=7+(6) CHK: 6=9+(−3)

7 3.1 SOLVING ONE-STEP EQUATIONS: USING DIVISION
KEEP YOUR EQUATION ALIGNED! Inverse of multiplication is division! EXAMPLE 3: −6𝑥=48 Divide -6 from both sides of equal signs − −6 Divide 48 and 𝒙=−𝟖 CHECK YOUR ANSWER: −6𝑥=48 Substitute 𝑥=− −6 −8 =48 ??? Multiply -6 and =48 YES! TRY ON YOUR OWN: 1. 4𝑥= −65=−5𝑦 𝑤=−54 𝒙=𝟏𝟐 − −5 𝟏𝟑=𝒚 𝒘=−𝟗 CHK: 4 12 =48 CHK: −65=−5(13) CHK: 6 −9 =−54

8 3.1 SOLVING ONE-STEP EQUATIONS: USING MULTIPLICATION
KEEP YOUR EQUATION ALIGNED! Inverse of division is multiplication! EXAMPLE 4: 𝑥 4 =5 Multiply 4 to both sides of equal signs 4∙ 𝑥 4 =5∙4 Multiply 5 and 𝒙=𝟐𝟎 CHECK YOUR ANSWER: 𝑥 4 =5 Substitute 𝑥= (20) 4 =5 ??? Divide 20 and =5 YES! TRY ON YOUR OWN: 𝑡 −3 = = 𝑐 𝑎 5 =−11 −3∙ ∙−3 7∙ ∙7 5∙ ∙5 𝒕=−𝟐𝟕 𝟒𝟐=𝒄 𝒂=−𝟓𝟓 CHK: (−27) −3 =9 CHK: 6= (42) 7 CHK: (−55) 5 =−11

9 3.1 SOLVING ONE-STEP EQUATIONS: USING RECIPROCALS
KEEP YOUR EQUATION ALIGNED! Inverse of fraction is a reciprocal! EXAMPLE 5: − 2 7 𝑥=4 Multiply − 7 2 to both sides − 7 2 ∙− 2 7 =4∙− 7 2 Multiply 4 and -7, then divide by 𝑥= 4(−7) 2 𝒙=−𝟏𝟒 CHECK YOUR ANSWER: 𝑥 4 =5 Substitute 𝑥=− − 2 7 (−14)=4 ??? Multiply -2 and -14, then divide by −2(−14) 7 = 28 4 =4 YES! TRY ON YOUR OWN: 𝑤= =− 3 4 𝑚 6 5 ∙ ∙ 6 5 − 4 3 ∙ ∙− 4 3 𝒘= 𝟔𝟎 𝟓 =𝟏𝟐 −𝟑𝟔 𝟑 =−𝟏𝟐=𝒎
