Session 25: WCF Chapter VII - Of God’s Covenant with Man, Sections 5&6
2
Outline of WCF Chapter VII
7.1 Only God can bridge the separation between Him and man. He condescends to by means of covenants. 7.2 God first revealed His Covenant of Works, conditioned upon Adam’s perfect obedience. 7.3 When Adam disobeyed, God next revealed His Covenant of Grace, conditioned upon Christ’s perfect obedience. 7.4 The Covenant of Grace is often called a testament, because Jesus’ death puts the Covenant into effect. 7.5 & 7.6 More detail on the Covenant of Grace...

CHAPTER VII - Of God’s Covenant with Man
5. This covenant was differently administered in the time of the law, and in the time of the gospel: under the law it was administered by promises, prophecies, sacrifices, circumcision, the paschal lamb, and other types and ordinances delivered to the people of the Jews, all foresignifying Christ to come; which were, for that time, sufficient and efficacious, through the operation of the Spirit, to instruct and build up the elect in faith in the promised Messiah, by whom they had full remission of sins, and eternal salvation; and is called the old Testament.
6
Promises – Legally binding declarations by God that give the person or people to whom they are made a right to expect the performance or forbearance of a specified act
7
Promises
8
Prophecies – Advance disclosures by God of future events
9
Prophecies
10
Sacrifices – Burnt, meal, peace, sin and trespass offerings that foreshadowed Christ’s once and final sacrifice
11
Sacrifices
12
Circumcision – A sign and sacrament symbolizing one’s participation in a covenant
13
The Paschal Lamb – The lamb sacrificed at Passover
14
The Paschal Lamb
15
Types – Models of a future likeness called an “antitype”
17
Ordinances – Laws and regulations indicating God’s righteousness
18
Ordinances – The Law 2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” Galatians 3:19a – “Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made” Romans 7:6 – “But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.” Romans 6:14 – “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”
19
Colossians 2:17 Jeremiah 31:33,34 Ephesians 2:14-19 Galatians 3:14,16 Acts 15:11 Romans 3:21-23,30 Psalm 32:1 Hebrews 13:8

CHAPTER VII - Of God’s Covenant with Man
6. Under the gospel, when Christ, the substance, was exhibited, the ordinances in which this covenant is dispensed are the preaching of the Word, and the administration of the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper: which, though fewer in number, and administered with more simplicity, and less outward glory, yet, in them, it is held forth in more fullness, evidence, and spiritual efficacy, to all nations, both Jews and Gentiles; and is called the new Testament. There are not therefore two covenants of grace, differing in substance, but one and the same, under various dispensations.
21
Preaching of the Word – Announcing the Gospel with the purpose of exhorting listeners to become disciples of Jesus Christ – The Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20.
22
The administration of the sacrament of Baptism (a rite of identification) – In Reformed Theology, a sign and symbol of initiation into the visible church, or body of people who publicly claim faith in Christ.
23
The administration of the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper (a rite of communion) – In Reformed Theology, a ceremony that spiritually nourishes and strengthens a believer’s unity with Christ.

CHAPTER VII - Of God’s Covenant with Man
6. There are not therefore two covenants of grace, differing in substance, but one and the same, under various dispensations.
25
“more fullness” – Describes the Lord’s Supper, which more fully pictures the sacrifice of Christ than the sacrifice of a lamb. “evidence” – Christ’s death is clear “evidence” that he was indeed the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. “more spiritual efficacy” – The Spirit of God works more powerfully and extensively than in the previous dispensation.
