1 Impact of industry and People
Dorset Coastline Impact of industry and People

2 Poole Harbour Industry is main problem. It is the 5th busiest port.
Containerisation has given rise to its port status. A major ferry port too Drilling oil in the middle of the harbour Watersports Wildlife sanctuaries

3 Poole Local Plan ‘to protect and conserve the unique landscape qualities and wildlife value of Poole Harbour and coastal zone.’ South side of harbour it is designated a SSSI, with Ramsar status, which offers protection. Southern part of South Haven Peninsula was established as a Nature Reserve in 1962.

4 Shell Bay Sand Dunes Heavily populated by both residents and visitors – extreme pressure on habitats. Used for training during World War II, so impact of live shells, vehicles and soldiers Post-war very popular sandy beaches, increase in visitors lead to erosion of dunes. Human and canine feet also erode established dunes

5 Solutions Embryo dunes have been fenced off to allow them an opportunity to grow. Wooden walkways have been constructed. They look natural and it is easier to walk on them than on sand.

6 Lulworth Cove/Durdle Door
Dorset coast path. Both areas are ‘honeypots’ Cliff pathway – on top eroded by feet. At bottom wave-cut notch and overhang collapse. Leads to cliff collapse

7 Solutions 1. Alternative path – this is a longer route and goes further inland. This means that there are less sea views. 2. Uphill climb from Lulworth has been reinforced to take pressure from feet. Chalk rubble and steps with timber supports have been put in the steepest section for security and less likelihood of a landslip.

8 Path can be regarded as a scar due to the white chalk that is used.

9 Lulworth Cove Country roads become congested in summer. Passing of buses very difficult. At the cove there is a dead-end so turning difficult.

10 Solutions Car park has been doubled in size.
Mini-roundabout to help turn at cove. Car park seen as an unacceptable scar on the landscape.

11 Protected Land East of Cove – military land
South and west of Swanage little ‘honey pot’ activities so less people visit and protection is given as a result.
