3 Starter/Bell Ringer Activity
Students, please take your seats with your assigned teams. Delegate one team member to be today’s team leader. As a group, come up with an answer to this question: What do all these cardboard boxes have in common? Be prepared to share this with the class. Teacher: This is the “Introduction” portion to be completed as student enter the classroom. Refer to pg 7 of the Lesson Plan. It should kick off the class for a few minutes to get students “on task” and ready for the Team activity, the individual activity, and then the all-class Wrap Up. It should only take a few minutes of time while you take roll.

4 Refresh your Vocabulary
As a class, let’s refresh our memory on a few key words: Building materials Quantity vs. quality survey Estimate Square footage Volume vs. area Scale factor Foot, inch, yard, cubic, square, etc… Common denominator, rounding, fraction, mixed number, etc... Yes, these are “math” terms! Teacher: Lead a Class Discussion briefly refreshing everyone’s recollection of what these words mean. These words should be prominently placed in the room for today’s lesson. Refer to Page 6 of the Lesson to get definitions. Also refer to the Math Dictionary Book, listed in the “References” portion of the Lesson. This should only take about 5 minutes of time.

5 Let’s Start With Our Student Teams
With your team, you will follow the handout. You will answer all 6 questions. You will first answer all 6 questions using a cardboard box for measurements. You will then answer all 6 questions again using the simple house floor plan handouts. When your team has answered all the questions, you will proceed on to the individual assignment. Teacher: Keep time or delegate 1 student to be the time keeper. Active monitoring and assistance as needed as you walk around the room. This is the main portion of the lesson, and should take about 30 minutes.

6 Let’s Work On Our Own Now
On your own, you will follow the instructions at the end of the handout. You will need a piece of graph paper. You will answer all 3 questions. Write all your calculations and computations out to receive full credit. When you finish the assignment, turn it in. Teacher: Keep time or delegate 1 student to be the time keeper. Active monitoring and assistance as needed as you walk around the room. This is a follow up to the Student Team activity portion of the lesson, and should take about 5 minutes.

7 Wrap Up and Summary What did we actually measure today?
What units/increments of measurement did we use? What other units/increments of measurement CAN we use that are similar? How do we know what unit we are using? How do we know what unit we should be using? Can we convert to that unit if we need to? How? What other materials need to be measured? Teacher, prompt students in this closing “Wrap Up” class discussion. It should take 5-10 minutes at the end of class.
