2 About SHSMO The Society was founded in May by the Missouri Press Association and established as a trustee of the state a year later. SHSMO collects, preserves, and publishes materials that enhance research and support learning opportunities in Midwest studies. Research centers are located in Cape Girardeau, Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, St. Louis, and Springfield.

3 About SHSMO In 2013, SHSMO was designated by the Missouri General Assembly as the state's planning agent for the Missouri Bicentennial Celebration commemorating 200 years of statehood in 2021. SHSMO publishes the Missouri Historical Review. The cornerstone of SHSMO's publications program since 1906, this quarterly journal offers scholarly articles on diverse topics in Missouri history. Through its education program, SHSMO, along with the Missouri Humanities Council, administers National History Day in Missouri.

6 Manuscripts The manuscript collection consists of photographs, oral histories, correspondence, diaries and journals, and audiovisual material, as well as the records. Organizational Records Civic and social organization Government agencies Businesses Churches Schools Personal and Family Papers

7 Newspapers The collection and preservation of Missouri newspapers has been a primary mission of the Society since its founding. Newspaper begin with the July 26, 1808, issue of the St. Louis Missouri Gazette. Newspapers offer researchers a wealth of information about the day-to-day lives of Missourians and the political, cultural, economic, and religious events that have influenced them. Newspapers can also be used as genealogical resources. Obituaries Marriage announcements Birth announcements

10 Visitor Information Researchers should contact research center staff as early as possible to verify that the manuscript collection they would like to view is available. The majority of our collections are stored off-site and must be called- in for viewing. Collections stored at one research center can be viewed at any of the others. Transfers between campus research centers or off-site storage can take up to two weeks.

11 Visitor Information We encourage researchers to look for information on the Society’s website before contacting to request materials. Specific information like collection, box, and folder numbers are especially helpful in requesting materials. Once materials arrive at the research center, the researcher will be contacted by staff so an appointment can be made. Upon arrival researchers are asked to sign a registration form and present a photo ID. A copy of the ID will be made and kept with other registration materials.
