The war in Darfur was a guerrilla conflict or civil war centered on the Darfur region of Sudan. It began in in February 2003 when the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army and Justice and Equality Movement groups in Darfur took up arms accusing the Sudanese government of oppressing non-Arab Sudanese in favor of Sudanese Arabs. It is also known as the Darfur Genocide.

4. People involved:
Darfur rebels – took up arms against the Sudanese government because they believed it was oppressing non-Arab Sudanese and giving preference to Arab Sudanese
Janjaweed – government supported group hired to help fight off and/or kill the Darfur rebels
One side of the conflict was composed mainly of the official Sudanese military and police, and the Janjaweed, a Sudanese military and police, and the Janjaweed, a Sudanese militia group recruited mostly from the Arabized indigenous Africans and few Arab Bedouin. The majority of other Arab groups in Darfur remained uninvolved in the conflict. The other combatants are made up of rebel groups. Although the Sudanese government publicly denies that it supports the Janjaweed, it has been providing financial assistance and weapons to the militia and has been organizing joint attacks targeting civilians.

5. Reasons for Genocide
Oil: China supplied the Darfur government with guns to protect it’s oil supply.
Ethnic Conflict: Sudan is made up of many different ethnic groups such as Arabs, Blacks, and Tribal people.
Desertification: The Janjaweed, a herding group in the west, were hired to kill people in Darfur, Sudan. With the desert extending, the Janjaweed could no longer rely on herding to live.
There are various estimates on the number of human casualties which range up to several hundred thousand dead, from either direct combat or starvation and disease inflicted by the conflict. There have also been mass displacements and coercive migrations, forcing millions into refugee camps or over the border and creating large humanitarian crisis and is regarded by many as a genocide.

7. Journal Entry
Imagine you are a survivor of Darfur. Write a 1 page journal entry detailing your experience. Your entry should consist of three paragraphs, 5-7 sentences each. In your journal, address:
How the conflict has affected your life, your family and your future plans
Why you believe it is happening, who is to blame, and how it can be helped
The Sudanese government and JEM signed a ceasefire agreement in February 2010, with a Darfur Peace Agreement signed in The JEM has the most to gain from this.
