Prepositions Prepositions are words that show a relationship between a noun and another word.

Prepositions relationship between a noun and another word.
They can indicate: location: at Mimi’s house time: at noon OR direction: above the TV ALL prepositions provide extra details: from my parents, by myself relationship between a noun and another word.

Prepositional phrases
PREPOSITION + Sometimes a helping word (the, a or an) NOUN (person, place, or thing)

For Example: on is the preposition the is helping word
The puppy is (on the floor). on is the preposition the is helping word (also called an article) floor is the noun

Identify the Prepositional phrases
Maura’s cat pushed the toy under the table in the kitchen. In New York, we walked across a bridge with interesting statues. The leaves changed from green to red.

On a 1/2-sheet of paper, write the phrases you identified.
Write just the prepositional phrase. (example: on the floor) Make sure all team names are at the top of the page. Talk: Without the prepositional phrase, do you still have a complete sentence?

1. Choose a holiday or family event. 2. On a piece of notebook paper, write two to four paragraphs telling about the event or holiday and what your family does each on this special occasion. 3. [Bracket] each prepositional phrase, underline each preposition and tell its function. (You may do this on the back, at the bottom or in the margins using arrows to point to the phrase.)
