Early Focus of the GIS Inventory
Original purpose – provide an “inventory” to show what, where and who of state, local and tribal data Volunteer effort Contained: Status of data coverage Metadata and search capabilities Location of GIS professionals

States enthusiastic to contribute GISI to become more of a source for authoritative data Focus on providing access to web services and downloadable data Better leverage technical advances (ArcGIS Online, state clearinghouses, automated harvesting

The GISI obtains dataset records from states, local, educational, not-for-profits The GISI enhances that metadata The GISI is harvested by Data.gov and then is provided to the Geospatial Platform The DHS’s Geospatial Information Infrastructure accesses data from Data.gov/GeoPlatform.gov Data.Gov/ GSP Non-Fed Data Providers Non-Fed Data Providers (Curated) GISI
