1
Matter & Kinetic Molecular Theory
2
Matter What is it???
3
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space. States of Matter
Solid – rigid shape, fixed volume Liquid – fluid, fixed volume Gas – fluid, no fixed volume
4
Kinetic Molecular Theory
All matter consists of extremely tiny particles called atoms and molecules, which are in constant motion.
5
Activity – Kinetic Molecular Theory
Questions that should be answered for each step of the activity: Are the atoms able to move freely or is their movement restricted? How do the atoms interact with each other? Do they collide randomly or do they hit the same other atoms each time? Based on the movement of the atoms, what phase of matter do you believe this represents?
6
Kinetic Molecular Theory
Solids – atoms are packed closely together Atoms in solids rarely come in contact with atoms other that their neighbors Liquids – atoms are arranged at random Atoms in liquids are not confined to specific locations and can move past one another Gases – atoms are arranged at random Under normal conditions the particles in gases are far apart Gas particles move very rapidly because they are not restricted by their neighbors
