2
Why make a video? To entertain ourselves and the audience
To instruct or inform the audience on a certain topic To preserve family, school, group or personal memories

Entertainment Videos Jolts per minute measures the pace and entertainment value of a program. It is defined as a movement of excitement generated by a laugh, violent act, movement of people or objects within a frame, a loud part of the soundtrack, or a rapid cut from scene to scene. Not enough jolts? You audience will tune out and become BORED!
10
Instructional Videos Your audience may know little or nothing about the topic Usually leads audience in a step by step manner with opportunities to review Procedure or function shown as if audience was there, the camera becomes the eyes for the audience to see As clearly as possible. Close-ups are important to show detail, but mix with Wide shots to establish the setting.
11
Instructional Videos Different formats include: How-to Videos
Safety Videos Documentary
12
Informational Videos Share many similarities with instructional videos but they are less “teachy” Aspects of the subject which will be of most interest to the audience or ones that will affect them directly are emphasized. News Videos Journalism is the process of gathering, organizing reporting and interpreting the news
13
Memory Videos Most consumers purchased video cameras for this purpose.
Memory videos must show us what event or situation we are preserving and whom we are remembering. Use a variety of shots, wide to establish setting and close-ups to focus on individuals. Normal eye level angles helps audience feel like they were there!
14
Promotional Videos Purpose is to sell or promote a product, service or an idea. Hard sell approach -many jolts, upbeat music, loud voices, bright colours and plenty of action Soft sell approach -more subtle, give audience more time to think and respond to a message. Use close-ups, show the action, demonstrate to sell.
15
Promotional Videos Keep videos short, usually set up in a mall, trying to catch attention of a passersby. A Video Resume a unique way of promoting yourself for a career or even a post secondary institution.
16
Analytical Videos Examines a process or movement in detail.
Audience knows the skill, they just want to improve it. Viewers want to examine exactly what is happening at each phase. Used by coaches, athletes, judges. Techniques such as slow-motion, freeze-frame and fast-motion reveal detail that can’t be viewed at normal speed.
17
Art Videos More powerful than entertainment videos in expressing ideas and emotions. It is not a video about art, it is art. Powerful images and sounds that have a strong effect on the minds, and even the hearts of the viewers. Know your equipment and its capabilities, especially when dealing with special effects.
18
Art Videos What inspires the art video?
A strong feeling about an issue, a person, a place. A love for particular piece of music or kind of music. A respect for the history of a community, a country or an ethnic group. A desire to communicate with others one’s innermost feelings or ideals.
19
Now you are ready and informed to make decisions about the right type of video for you or your client.
