1 Introduction to Operating Systems
Lesson 7 Novell Client

2 Objectives Understand the niche market addressed by Novell’s operating system. Define local area network and wide area network. Install Novell Client to be used with a variety of other operating systems. Understand how Novell manages resources on the network. Install a shared printer. Lesson 7 – Novell Client

3 Customers Automotive Banking and Finance Consumer Products Retail
Education Electronics Energy Government Healthcare Industrial Semiconductors Services Telecommunications Transportation Lesson 7 – Novell Client

4 What Is a Network? A network is group of computers that can communicate with each other, share hardware resources, and access remote computers or other networks. LAN WAN Protocols are used to govern transmissions between two machines or pieces of software. Lesson 7 – Novell Client

5 Pre-installation Tasks
Check server protocols and requirements. Check for a valid network connection. Check client workstation requirements. Lesson 7 – Novell Client

6 Installation Methods CD-ROM installation method – Good for one or a small number of workstations. Network installation methods – Good for installing the client on several workstations. Lesson 7 – Novell Client

7 Resource Management NDS (Novell Directory Services) is a global database of network objects and users. NDS uses a tree structure to organize all network objects. There are three major objects contained in the NDS database: Root objects Container objects Leaf objects Lesson 7 – Novell Client

8 The Root Object The root object is the beginning of the NDS tree.
All NDS objects exist in the root. Each NDS tree can have only one root. Lesson 7 – Novell Client

9 The Container Object Container objects organize the NDS tree.
There are four main types of container objects: Organization objects Organizational Unit objects Country objects Locality objects Lesson 7 – Novell Client

10 Unique Features of NetWare
Printer setup can be automated so that users’ workstations can attach to network printers each time a user logs onto the network. Users can set up network printing using Windows’ Add Printer Wizard. Novell’s Capture Printer Port. Lesson 7 – Novell Client

11 Summary The beginning of the LAN was in 1983 when Novel realized the potential of connecting a company’s desktop computing resources and sharing them. A network is a group of computers that can communicate with each other, share hardware resources, and access remote computers or other networks. Novell NetWare networks are used in many of the major corporations around the world. Lesson 7 – Novell Client

12 Summary (continued) If your installation involves new client software installation or an upgrade from older client software, the software is installed or upgraded when users log in. NDS is a distributed, replicated naming service that maintains information about and provides access to every resource on the network. Users can set up a Novell printer by using the Add Printer Wizard in Windows. Lesson 7 – Novell Client
