EATING DISORDERS Disorders that are the result of unhealthy ways to cope with emotional problems. Thinness is often equated with self-worth or attractiveness. Weight gain is perceived as “being in control” or the result of self loathing.

ANOREXIA NERVOSA It isn't really about food.
People with anorexia attempt to maintain a weight that's far below normal for their age and height.

Signs & Symptoms Excessive restriction of food intake Excessive exercise Extreme weight loss Insomnia & Fatigue Dehydration & dry skin Low blood pressure Dizziness or fainting Absence of menstruation Constipation

BINGE EATING frequently consume unusually large amounts of food.
usually done in secret. “want” to stop but can't resist the urges .

S&S Eating unusually large amounts of food & rapidly
Eating even when you're full or not hungry Eating until you're uncomfortably full Frequently eating alone Feeling that your eating behavior is out of control Feeling depressed, disgusted, ashamed, guilty or upset about your eating Feeling isolated and having difficulty talking about your feelings Frequently dieting but always unsuccessful Losing and gaining weight repeatedly

BULIMIA NERVOSA Binging followed by purging
Purging after a normal-size meal. Misusing laxatives, diuretics or enemas

TREATMENT Treatments for eating disorders usually involve psychotherapy, nutrition education, family counseling, medications and hospitalization.
