1 Active Learning Outcomes of the session:
To develop our understanding of how to ensure that Active Learning Strategies are used to support and consolidate the learning. To come away with some useful strategies.

2 Kagan Groups Working groups (not always!)
All students can see the benefits HPA/most able students are not always left to “just” support others.

3 Kagan Groups Example: Analysing a Poem
You have picked me out. Through a distant shot of a building burning you have noticed now that a white cotton shirt is twirling, turning. In fact I am waving, waving. Small in the clouds, but waving, waving. Does anyone see a soul worth saving? So when will you come? Do you think you are watching, watching a man shaking crumbs or pegging out washing? I am trying and trying. The heat behind me is bullying, driving, but the white of surrender is not yet flying. I am not at the point of leaving, diving. A bird goes by. The depth is appalling. Appalling that others like me should be wind-milling, wheeling, spiralling, falling. Are your eyes believing, believing that here in the gills I am still breathing. But tiring, tiring. Sirens below are wailing, firing. My arm is numb and my nerves are sagging. Do you see me, my love. I am failing, flagging. Structure How many stanzas? Rhyme scheme Rhythm/Repetition/Enjambment Sonnet? Meaning What is the message of the poem? What is the poet discussing? What is the theme? Imagery What pictures do you get in your mind when you read the poem? Similes/metaphors/personification Why has the poet included these images? Language Any effective, unusual or complicated words Which words and phrases create the image? Is the language simple or complex? Semantic field Effect What is the effect of the poem? What does the poem make you feel/think about? What opinions does the narrator/poet have? What is the poet trying to say about the subject or theme of the poem? 4 1 2 3

4 A B Jot Thoughts You have been given an image.
Mind map the following in your books: What does your image represent? What are the connotations associated with this image? Why? Shall I do this one? Challenge: How can you link this image to current events from around the World?

5 A B You are now going to match up with fellow As/Bs to share and compare your findings. Challenge: This is an opportunity to develop your interpretations by considering different viewpoints on the text. Make sure that you add any additional findings to your source.

6 A B Now, snowball into four and share your findings.
Do you share similar/contrasting interpretations? Add to your original mind map. We won’t probably get chance to do this one...but can show them. Challenge: How do these images link to each other?

7 Centre of the Universe One person will stand in the middle of room with a response to the topic or question set. Stand near the person if you agree with their statement. Move further away if you disagree. Give a reason for where you are standing on your whiteboard. This can be done sitting down. Links to other learning. What’s next. How can talk be structured? Shall i talk through the “using” active learning rather than just “doing it”?
