Geodesign Spatial Science 101 Building Information Modeling BIM GIS
Geographic System CIM Civil Geodesign Building Information Modeling If you are part of doing BIM process you are actually a spatial scientist. It’s too bad they put “Building” in the BIM name because it would have been more accurate if they had called it ”Geodesign” You are designing in Space and recording where things are in space. What is BIM: Rose by any other name BIM/GIS/CIM? Boundaries starting to disappear, eventual data mashup GET GEEKY: Diagram of different spatial data types and show attributes behind the data CIM: Civil Information Modeling—Civil infrastructure, 3D surface and sub-surface geometric content, more horizontal, playing catchup to BIM world BIM: smaller area, more vertical, based on 0,0,0 point. That survey point represents a known point in the GIS world GIS: where in the world, based on GPS coordinates, gets in to the weeds on projections due to round earth, satellite collection

BIM is the current industry standard but will encounter folks/contractors at different stages BIM meme J-curve: Takes time to see benefits across an organization Contractor reluctance to SI standards different from company flow for A/Es Out of comfort zone, habit changes = extra time = extra cost They have software, young hires in last 5-8 years that’s all they know how to do Where it may be going and why Future software BIM is the current industry standard but will encounter folks/contractors at different stages BIM meme J-curve: Takes time to see benefits across an organization Contractor reluctance to SI standards different from company flow for A/Es Out of comfort zone, habit changes = extra time = extra cost They have software, young hires in last 5-8 years that’s all they know how to do Where it may be going and why Future software

BIM is the whole process
Building Information Modeling, aka BIM: • It’s a process, not a technology or software. • A digital representation of both the physical and functional characteristics of a facility. • Building Information Modeling is a process. • A DIGITAL representation of both the PHYSICAL and FUNCTIONAL characteristics of a facility. • BIM applies to all aspects of the process
