When we’re excited, stressed or scared the sympathetic nervous system: Tenses our muscles Makes our heart beat faster Moves blood away from digestive organs Shuts down elimination

As we relax and unwind, the parasympathetic nervous system: Moves blood to the digestive organs Relaxes muscles Aids elimination Initiates healing and self-repair

12 Sympathetic vs. Parasympathetic Effects

13 Neurotransmitters Nerves work by a combination of electrical impulses and chemical messengers called neurotransmitters Nerve cell gets stimulated Electrical impulse moves down to end of cell Neurotransmitter released into synapse Neurotransmitter received by next nerve cell New nerve cell told to stimulate or inhibit another electrical impulse
