THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
2
HOW THE NERVOUS SYSTEM WORKS
RECEIVES INFORMATION RESPONDS TO INFORMATION MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS -- Keeping the body’s internal environment stable when the external environment changes.
3
NEURONS SENSORY, INTERNEURON, MOTOR
A. SENSORY NEURONS -- picks up STIMULI from environment. The impulse travels to the ----- C. INTERNEURON -- found in the brain or spinal cord -- carries the impulse to the---- B. MOTOR NEURON -- sends impulse to muscle to RESPOND. A C B
4
NEURONS Dendrites Axon Movement of impulse
Carry impulses TOWARD cell body Carry impulses AWAY from cell body DENDRITE Electrical charge is transmitted across SYNAPSE by CHEMICAL NEUROTRANSMITTERS.
5
DIVISIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Branches out from CNS and connects it with the rest of the body
6
THE BRAIN CEREBRUM, CEREBELLUM, BRAIN STEM
Divided into LOBES – frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital SOME FUNCTIONS – reasoning, planning, speech, movement, orientation, visual perception, memory, empathy, impulse control BRAIN STEM breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure. Coordination of movement, posture, and balance
7
REFLEXES automatic response that occurs without conscious control
