Coil Vessel Project

Coil Building Coil is the hand-building method we will use for the next project. Here are some examples > Think about the following while you look at these samples How the vessel is constructed How to use coils in a unique way What the overall shape of your pot will be Will you smooth out some areas and leave others with the coil form exposed? What will be the shape of your base (a slab that we will build upon) Could you add some texture or designs to the coils in some parts?

Your Assignment Create a coil pot – it can hold water or not (up to you) Use the Coil Building method Must be at least 8 inches tall Should use unique ways of building with coils – spiral, braided, twisted etc (see next slide) Can have a color element using colored slip (apply after building as the last step)

Coil Process/Steps 1 – SKETCH ideas in sketch book. At least 3 different forms with unique ways to create with coil. Get idea approved. 2 – Roll out slab to create base. Should be about 3/8” thick. Keep this wet enough so you can join PLASTIC clay to it (ie. The coils you will roll out) 3 – Roll your coils and start building! 4 – Add colored slip (if desired) to wet clay pot. Can be starting to get leather-hard, but no drier than that! 5 – Don’t forget to sign name on bottom of piece!

Can be starting to get leather-hard, but no drier than that! 5 – Could you put additional elements onto your piece? Other hand-built items? Textures? 5 – Don’t forget to sign name on bottom of piece!

Forms for Coil Pots Make sure that your pot does not start to go outward top quickly. It can cause your project to collapse. Make gradual transitions in form. Don’t make an area too flat, it will also not be strong enough.
