Chemical Properties Hazardous materials
2
Chemical Properties Chemical Properties are often difficult to observe- they may only be noticeable during a reaction. Some examples of chemical properties include: Flammability Ability to Oxidize (Corrosive) Acidity or Alkalinity (pH)
3
Terminology and what it means
Flammability- the ability for something to ignite when around heat or flames. Ability to oxidize- this is the ability for a material to corrode, the most common form is rust. (oxidation) Alkalinity or acidity- this is how acidic or basic something is- it is measured by the pH scale. pH can indicate toxicity. (harmful if ingested)
4
Many chemicals are hazardous
Hazardous means any item (toxic, flammable or corrosive) that can cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment. Harm can be caused through a variety of ways such as ingestion (swallowing or eating), through absorption (through the skin), inhalation (breathing it in) and through reactions.
5
Types of hazards There are many types of hazards they include toxic, flammable and corrosive just to name a few. There are symbols to help you figure out the hazards for many different chemicals.
6
Think time List the types of hazards you can think of.
Try to identify if they are corrosive, flammable or toxic hazards. Some may be bio- chemical hazards as well. (Such as medical waste, viruses, etc…)
