Greek Tragedy Terms

Hamartia A flaw or error. The tragic hero falls because of some weakness in his character.

Peripeteia A sudden reversal of fortune or change is circumstances.

Anagnorisis A moment in a play where a character makes a critical discovery or has a sudden moment or realization (epiphany).

Catharsis Purification or purging of emotions. Tragedy first raises emotions of pity and fear and then purges them. According to Aristotle, both the audience and the tragic hero undergo catharsis.

Hubris Excessive pride; also, defiance of the gods. This leads to nemesis.

Nemesis A downfall caused by a character’s hamartia (the tragic flaw).

Greek Tragedy Terms We will apply these terms to Antigone, a tragic Greek play written by Sophocles around 441 BC.
