1 Greek Tragedy Terms

2 Hamartia A flaw or error. The tragic hero falls because of some weakness in his character.

3 Peripeteia A sudden reversal of fortune or change is circumstances.

4 Anagnorisis A moment in a play where a character makes a critical discovery or has a sudden moment or realization (epiphany).

5 Catharsis Purification or purging of emotions. Tragedy first raises emotions of pity and fear and then purges them. According to Aristotle, both the audience and the tragic hero undergo catharsis.

6 Hubris Excessive pride; also, defiance of the gods. This leads to nemesis.

7 Nemesis A downfall caused by a character’s hamartia (the tragic flaw).

8 Greek Tragedy Terms We will apply these terms to Antigone, a tragic Greek play written by Sophocles around 441 BC.
