1 THE NATIONS RAGE ACTS 12

2 THE NATIONS RAGE Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” Psalm 2:1-6

3 PERSECUTION & PRAYER About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword, and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. Acts 12:1-5

4 WHY EVIL, PAIN, SUFFERING?
Why was Herod in power? Why did James die and Peter get rescued? Why Christian martyrs? Why is the church persecuted? Why ____________?

5 EVIL, PAIN & SUFFERING ARE REAL
Moral injustice requires an objective, universal, absolute moral standard “Ought” and “ought not” require an objective, universal, absolute moral standard If God doesn’t exist, evil doesn’t exist & everything is permissible Only the Christian God provides the required objective, universal, absolute moral standard

8 BIBLICAL ANSWERS Not the way it was Not the way it will be
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. Gen 1:31 (ESV) Not the way it will be He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Rev 21:4 (ESV)

9 BIBLICAL ANSWERS The Triune God is all good
The Triune God is all powerful There is a hierarchy of good The Triune God has moral, logical reasons what He does – allowing evil, pain & suffering The Triune God is not obligated to give us His reasons for what He does

10 BIBLICAL RESPONSE TO EVIL, PAIN & SUFFERING
Know God’s character God planned the worst evil to save believers Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. Prov 3:5-7

11 EARTH OR HEAVEN? But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— 1 Corinthians 2:9

12 PETER RESCUED Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” Acts 12:6-11

13 WHAT IS REAL? When the servant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. And the servant said, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” He said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha Kings 6:15-17

14 PRAYER When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place. Acts 12:12-17

15 PRIDE Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there. Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food. On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. Acts 12:18-23

16 PRIDE VS. HUMILITY Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:6-7 Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! Psalm 115:1

17 GOD’S WORD But the word of God increased and multiplied. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark. Acts 12:24-25 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it Isaiah 55:11

19 HOW DO YOU LIVE? ARE YOU READY TO DIE?
Not how long you live, but who you live for and where you live forever. “When it comes time for you to die, be sure all you have to do is die.” Jim Elliot “With his sword unsheathed and his armor still on, he went directly into the presence of his King with the stain of battle still on his garments.” Dr. Gordon Taylor
