1 Tuesday, January 19th Schedule: Entry Task Volcano notes
Please start silently reading 8.2. When you finish, you can work on your homework until we move on as a class. Homework: 8.2 Questions ISN 126 Answer questions 1-6 from page 269 in your textbook Answer using full sentences, IQIA. Objective: I can understand the characteristics of the different types of volcanoes Homework 8.2 Questions

2 Volcano Notes A volcano is a place (usually a mountain) where magma reaches the earth’s surface.

3 Lava- Vent- Magma Chamber Volcano Anatomy Crater- Erupted magma
The opening in the volcano Pit at the top of the volcano Magma Chamber

4 Four things that can come out of a volcano

5 1. Lava: molten rock that flows or oozes onto the earth’s surface

6 2. Lahars: flows of mud, rock and water

7 3. Pyroclastic flows: hot avalanches of ash and gas

8 4. Tephra: gases and fragments of rock and lava sent high into the sky

9 Three Types of Volcanoes
1. A cinder cone volcano has steep sides and is made from explosive eruptions of small particles of rock that form a loose pile of volcanic rock fragments.

10 Three Types of Volcanoes
An example of a cinder cone volcano is Paricutin in Mexico.

11 Three Types of Volcanoes
2. A shield volcano is built up of many slow thin layers of hardened lava.

12 Three Types of Volcanoes
An example of a shield volcano is Mauna Loa Volcano in Hawaii. It is the worlds largest shield volcano.

13 Three Types of Volcanoes
3. A composite volcano is usually cone-shaped and is built up of layers of hardened lava and rock fragments.

14 Three Types of Volcanoes
Mount St. Helens is a Typical composite volcano.

15 Three Classifications of Volcanoes:
Active Volcano: A volcano which has erupted recently or might erupt soon.

16 Three Classifications of Volcanoes:
2. Dormant volcano: A volcano that has been quiet for a long time, but still has signs it may erupt again.

17 Three Classifications of Volcanoes:
Extinct volcano: A volcano that has not erupted for thousands of years and cannot erupt again.

18 8.2 Questions-ISN p. 126 Answer questions 1-6 from page 269 in your textbook Answer using full sentences, IQIA.

19 Wednesday, January 20th Entry Task
Write down the definition and match it with the correct term. Definitions: Motion that transfers heat within a material The layer formed by Earth’s crust and the very top of the mantle Underwater mountain ranges found where the ocean floor is spreading. Terms: mid-ocean ridges, lithosphere, plate tectonics, convection current Schedule: 8.3 Reading and Chart Objective: I can understand information about different types of volcanoes Homework: Complete chart 8.3 RSG (ISN 128) Please Have on Desk: 8.2 Questions

20 As you read 8.3 complete the chart- do on ISN 129
Land (Geosphere) Air (Atmosphere) Water (Hydrosphere) Ways Volcanoes affect Each sphere. (Must have at least 6, may have more if needed) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

21 Thursday, January 21st Entry Task Answer the following questions full sentences, IQIA. Scientists regularly check the temperature of a lake on a volcano. Explain how this information might help them learn whether the volcano is becoming more active. Compare and Contrast: What do geysers and deep-sea vents that form chimneys have in common? How are they different? Explain which is more dangerous, a pyroclastic flow or a mudflow? Schedule: Bill Nye-Volcanoes Objective: I can understand how volcanoes affect Earth’s land, air, and water Homework: 8.3 Questions Please have on desk: Volcano Effects Chart 8.3 RSG

22 Friday, January 22nd Entry Task Notebook check will happen next week. It will be from ISN 126-present. Final will be on Thursday (periods 3 and 5) or Friday (periods 4 and 6). All next week will be review for our final. Bring your notebook every day. Schedule: Chapter 7 and 8 review Objective: I can review important information about earthquakes and volcanoes Homework: Complete Reviews Please have on your desk: 8.3 questions
