ABRASIVES and ABRASIVE CUTTING
M122 Abrasive Machining ABRASIVES and ABRASIVE CUTTING
2
Abrasives Abrasives perform the same function as the teeth of a saw.
3
Main Abrasives Categories
Natural Abrasives Emory Conventional Abrasives Aluminum Oxide, Silicon Carbide Super Abrasives Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN), Diamonds
4
Aluminum Oxide Most commonly used grinding abrasive
Classified as a conventional abrasive Used on all ferrous materials except cast iron Bauxite ore is the main ingredient
5
Silicon Carbide Classified as a conventional abrasive
Good for high density materials Carbides, stone, ceramics, cast iron Harder & tougher than Aluminum Oxide Varies in color: Green is used mainly for grinding cemented carbides and other hard materials Black is used for grinding cast iron, ceramics, and soft nonferrous metals
6
Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)
Twice as hard as aluminum oxide Can withstand high temperatures Very little dressing is required
7
Diamonds Manufactured Diamonds
General Electric 1954 Used Primarily for grinding Tungsten Carbide Breaks down quickly when grinding steel
8
Review Q’s What is the most commonly used abrasive matl.?
