Public Speaking Copyright Right Brain Curriculum

Did you know that in a poll of Americans, people said their number one fear is giving a speech? Their number two fear was dying! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
3
Think about that, number 2 was dying
Think about that, number 2 was dying. People would literally rather die than give a speech! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
4
Well it doesn’t have to be that scary
Well it doesn’t have to be that scary. In this class, we will give you some pointers and practice that will make it less scary. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
5
Let’s start with some good things to remember today
Let’s start with some good things to remember today. Later we will work on some techniques to make public speaking less scary. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
6
Now, when you give a speech, you are telling your audience you have something important to say. You are telling them something they should want to hear! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
7
For that reason you want to speak in a loud voice… Have you ever seen someone speaking in class or at school or somewhere else who is not speaking loudly enough? Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
8
You have to strain your ears to hear them
You have to strain your ears to hear them. And you want to shout out, “WHATTTT???” Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
9
That’s no good. You want to speak in a loud enough voice that everyone can hear you. Even people standing way in the back of the room! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
10
I’ve noticed there are some people who speak very quiet in front of class but when they are outside on the recess yard, they are yelling and shouting and speaking very loudly! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
11
You want to use your recess voice
You want to use your recess voice. In this class we are actually going to practice shouting! You will have a chance to use your very, very loudest voice so that when you give your speech, you can use a voice that is loud enough to be heard. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
12
Now another important part of public speaking is making eye contact with your audience. This means actually looking at the people you are speaking to… Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
13
This is a tough one! Because it is scary when giving a speech to look at the people you are speaking to. But it’s very important! If someone is looking at the floor while they are speaking it is not impressive. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
14
Turn and Talk with a partner: Why do you speakers should not look at the ground when they are giving a speech? Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
15
When you give your speech, try to look at the people in the audience
When you give your speech, try to look at the people in the audience. If that is really, really too scary, then to start you can try looking at a point just above your audience by the back wall. That way you won’t be staring at your feet! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
16
If you are really brave, you can try looking at one side the audience, and then the middle of the audience and then the other side of the audience. This way everyone feels you are looking at them. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
17
Now your posture is also important
Now your posture is also important. You want to make sure you are standing up tall. You are confident and you have something you want to say to your audience. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
18
If you are shifting around or standing on one foot, you are not showing your audience that you have something important to say. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
19
Sometimes you may have a visual aid or a poster you want to show your audience. You want to talk about your visual aid without turning your back on your audience. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
20
Sometimes inexperienced public speakers will stare at their poster while they are talking about it. The people in the audience will only be able to see the back of the speaker. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
21
One other thing speakers sometimes do is speak too fast
One other thing speakers sometimes do is speak too fast. This is a a natural thing to do because people tend to speak fast when they are nervous. After all, they want to get it over with! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
22
But it will be hard for your audience to hear the important things you have to say if you speak really fast. You want to slow down and speak clearly and concisely. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
23
Now that’s a lot to remember
Now that’s a lot to remember. We talked about speaking in a loud voice, standing tall, making eye contact with the audience, not turning your back and speaking slowly and clearly. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
24
But don’t worry! We will be practicing all of these things step by step until you feel more confident giving speeches. We will take it one step at a time! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum
