Physical and Chemical Changes
A Write On Activity
2
Warm Up In your own words define the Tyndall Effect.
What are two characteristics of a colloid. Give an example of a colloid. Solve the density formula for v if the mass is 45g and the density is 15 g/mL
3
Objective: Chemical/Physical Change: Differentiate
The learner will be able to (ESSENTIAL) distinguish between a physical and chemical change.
4
Matter Matter is everywhere.
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Matter is constantly experiencing both chemical and physical changes.
5
Physical Change Physical changes occur when matter changes its property but not its chemical nature. Appearance changes but substance does NOT. Physical property changes could include a change in: texture, shape, size, volume, mass, weight, and density.
6
Physical Change
7
Chemical Change Chemical changes are changes matter undergoes when it becomes new or different matter. To identify a chemical change look for signs such as color change, bubbling and fizzing, odor, light production, smoke, and presence of heat.
8
Chemical Change A chemical change occurs when fireworks are used. Fireworks are made of metals such as magnesium and copper. These change chemically as they light up the sky.
