February, 2017 Adding a “Metabolic Burst” What is a Metabolic Burst? A metabolic burst is a short bout of intense exercise that raises the heart rate and increase your metabolism post-exercise for a higher caloric burn. Exercise programs with metabolic bursts will be more time-efficient with short bursts of exercise. Examples of how to use Metabolic Bursts in your workout: Complete a 60 second burst of high-intensity running on the treadmill at a challenging incline. Recover for 2-4 minutes with strength exercises like bicep curls, wall sits, shoulder press, etc. Complete two 30 second bursts of squat jumps with 30 seconds of rest between them. Recover for another 2-4 minutes with a different set of strength exercises. Repeat until you accumulate 4-6 minutes of high intensity metabolic bursts. Modification Options for lower impact metabolic bursts: Utilize the bike, elliptical, or swimming pool for your high intensity bursts of exercise. Vary the length of each burst, feel free to add or decrease recovery time too! From Corporate Fitness Works Team Leader, Keriann Hill Corporate Fitness Works, Inc. Corporate Fitness Works, Inc.
