The rise and fall of civilizations and empires was dominated by the slow and steady rise of Europe. The remains include: the nature of the modern state, formalities of diplomacy, spread of legal principles, and impact of colonism.
The themes of war, peace, and power are continuously present in politics, which is why studying the ebbs and flows of these themes provides a link to present politics.
