AIMS: 1. To gain an overview of PHC specialty e.g., its philosophy and features, its methods and its holistic approach to patient care. 2. To help students become familiar with the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to become sensitive communicators and educators 3. To adopt and develop the knowledge and skills already acquired by students during their study and attachment to other departments and specialties in the medical school to be utilized in the PHC. 4. To provide an appropriate exposure to the discipline of Family Medicine which will assist student in making career decisions.

OBJECTIVES

I. BASIC AND CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE
Be able to list the principles of PHC and demonstrate an understanding of its role in patient care in Saudi Arabia. Be able to discuss the diagnosis and management of common Family Medicine problems. Recognize different models of consultations. Demonstrate and understand the role of social, psychological and Environmental factors in the pathogenesis and management plan of illness. Recognize the functions of family medical records. Demonstrate awareness of community resources and appropriate referral. Be familiar with the concept and methods of life-long learning an evidence-based medicine.

II. CLINICAL SKILLS 1. Interviewing (Consultation) skills:
a. Conduct a focused history, combining appropriate level of detail with efficient use of time. b. Elicit and attends to patient's agenda. 2. Interpersonal (communication) skills: a. Establish good rapport and apply good affective skills. b. Demonstrate verbal and non-verbal communication. 3. Physical examination and problem solving skills: a. Perform physical examination which is accurate and appropriate to the presenting problem. b. Make selective and appropriate use of investigation ,drugs and time. 4. Application of Knowledge/Judgement a Identify significant issues in patients presenting with undifferentiated problems, including differentiation of serious illness from minor or self-limiting problems. b Demonstrate an ability to deal with uncertainty when the diagnosis is unclear. c Formulate a patient-centred management plan which takes into account the physical, psychological and sociological factor identified. d. Recognise the role of different team members.

III. ATTITUDES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Be motivated to take on tasks and complete them reliably. Be cooperative and productive member of the health care team. Assume responsibility for own learning (self-directed learning) and to change behaviour accordingly. Demonstrate good professional and ethical standards. showing respect for patients and co-workers. Demonstrate respect of patient's autonomy and willingness to involve people in the responsibility for their own health. 6. Understand the patient's right to confidentiality and respect.

METHODOLOGY PHC rotation lasts 5 week
4 clinical sessions per week in the PHC centre the Family Medicine Department or will be in SDL

Large group tutorial(LGT)
Identify and specify the objectives of the session. Agree on how best to achieve these objectives. Conduct the consultation task as specified. Identify a clinical question related to the topic presented and apply steps of EBM

Consultation task The students are requested to demonstrate certain skills according to a specified task. Role play with peers Student observations of faculty with simulated or real patients video tapes of student interview with real or simulated patients. This will be done under the guidance of the tutor.

Evidence-based medicine task
formulate a clinical question search for the best available research evidence.

of each tutorial. Be ready!
