Greece Summary The Sea helped provide transportation and food (No Rivers), The Land was very mountainous and kept city-states separated, The Climate was warm and Dry Homer wrote the Epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey that are still read today The Trojan Horse effectively ended the Trojan war The Greeks thought anyone who did not participate in government was “A Beast” and “Lazy” The duty of all Athens’ citizens was to participate in government, to show they cared about their people and the city

Greece Summary Athens served as an example for all future governments
All male citizens were allowed to vote Rule of Law – Everyone follows the same laws That the Majority of the vote ruled (51% or more) Greek Philosophers Aristotle= Government is the highest level of goodness (for the people) Plato= The rich and powerful had to follow the laws too (No one above the Law) Herodotus, Greek Historian Father of History, wrote about Leonidas and the 300

Rome Summary In 509 BCE Rome became a Republic
Government were people elected leaders to make decisions for them (Representative Democracy) Unlike Athens, where all people voted on laws, Rome and the US elect representatives to vote/make laws for them Two Consuls (like Presidents) could only lead the Army and Government, 300 Senators could only make the Laws Known as Separation of Powers (Branches do things separately) Patricians were in control of the Senate, Plebeians had no voice in government The longer the Roman name, the richer you were (ex. Lucius Domitus Ahenabarbous vs. Steve Smith) Patricians were well educated and maintained political power over the less educated plebeians

Rome Summary Julius Caesar conquered Gaul (France) and made himself dictator for life Was killed by many Senators in the Roman Forum Roman Roads Created to move the army to other Roman territories easier, keep control Aqueducts Moved clean water to the cities through a small decline over hundreds of miles Use of the Arch to create taller bigger aqueducts Arenas (Coliseum) Built to entertain the public and take their worry away from the government
