Separatists- Puritans who separated from church of England
Moved to America in 1620 on the Mayflower formed Plymouth Colony
Mayflower Compact- contract by those onboard to form civil gov’t once landed
-Government for the people, by the people

3. Massachusetts Bay Colony
Started by John Winthrop in Boston
“City Upon a Hill”- Massachusetts would be an example to the world on how state and region should work
Close relationship of church and state
Keeps out religious ideas that differ from puritan beliefs

4. Rhode Island
Started by Roger Williams who was banished from Massachusetts for his beliefs
-land should be bought from Indians
-separation of church and state
Anne Hutchinson- banished from Massachusetts for her radical beliefs
-challenged church’s and gov’ts authority

5. Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine
Colony founded by Thomas Hooker who broke away from Massachusetts
1st written constitution, “Fundamental Orders of Connecticut,”  every man should vote
New Hampshire and Maine- formed from banished settlers from Mass.
Maine later purchased by Mass.

6. New England Society
New England developed a diverse economy without slaves
Built on shipbuilding (influence trade), fishing, lumbering, and small farming
Colonies developed town halls, allowed for more freedom to vote
landowners allowed to vote and pass laws to govern themselves

7. Indian Relations
English tensions with Indians increased as more settlers arrive
Pequot War- War erupts when Pequot tribe killed 9 settlers
First major battle between English and Indians
Colonists retaliate killing 400 people survivors sold into slavery
Colonists build militias after war

8. King Philip’s War ( )
Fought over Indians refusal to submit to colonial gov’t and laws
Indians (led by King Philip, or Metacomet) retaliated after two are arrested, tried, and executed for murder of a colonists
Indians cause massive casualty rate of Colonists, and destruction of 12 towns
Ends when Metacomet is killed
