Come up with a handy mnemonic or way to help you memorize the 5 Themes. You’ll be able to share your mnemonic in a couple of minutes, so try to be creative!

3. 5 Themes of Geography Location-where something is
Absolute location-a specific description of where something is located.
Only 1 thing can be there
Examples: address, latitude/longitude, GPS coordinates
Relative location-a general description of where something is in relation to something else
Multiple things could possibly be there
Ex: next to McDonald’s, on Main St., corner of 61st & Mingo

Place-refers to the features that define an area and make a place unique
Ex. At 29,029 feet, Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world.
Ex. The Grand Canyon is the deepest, most awe inspiring canyon in the United States.

Regions-areas that share at least one common characteristic
Political-based on actual boundaries set by the government
Example?
Physical-based on physical features
Cultural-based on culture traits
Traits = Language, religion, race, holidays, etc.

Ex. Many American Indians traveled from the southeast United States to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears
Ex. Many Nike shoes are made in Chinese factories & shipped to other countries

How we depend on the environment
How we modify the environment
How we adapt to the environment

Which theme of Geography? Use the next slides to have students identify which theme they think each picture goes with. For many of the pictures, there can be more than one right answer. That is the beauty of a class discussion. Students can argue and make points about which theme goes with which picture and it will solidify their understanding of the 5 Themes.

I have students apply the 5 Themes to our school because it’s something we all have in common. You could also have students apply the themes to their favorite TV show, movie, or book. The next slide shows some possible answers that students gave in my class after applying the themes to our schools.
