1 What are 3 properties of ionic compounds?
Catalyst – March 10/5, 2010 What are 3 properties of ionic compounds? What does conductivity measure? What is solubility? What has a higher 3rd ionization energy strontium or carbon? I hyperlinked the picture of the stopwatch to

2 Ionic Formulas…if we have time Exit Question
Today’s Agenda Catalyst HW Review Lab: Is It Ionic? Go Over Lab Results Ionic Formulas…if we have time Exit Question

3 Today’s Objectives SWBAT collect and record data about unknown substances to determine which substances are ionic.

4 REVIEW: Characteristics of Ionic Substances
1.Electrons are transferred 2.Bonds between metals and non- metals 3.They make crystals (usually solids, hard but can break) 4.High melting points 5.Good conductors of electricity when dissolved

5 Is It Ionic? Lab Now that you’ve learned what the general properties of ionic compounds are, it’s time to see if you can use those properties in the lab. Your goal is to determine whether or not each of the five unknowns is ionic in nature. You will use the three tests listed below to help you. As you complete each test, record the data and determine if the compound is “ionic” or “not ionic.”

6 Complete all three tests before moving on to the next substance
Test Protocol Complete all three tests before moving on to the next substance

7 Test #1: Physical Analysis
Analyze the COLOR, TEXTURE, STATE OF MATTER, HARDNESS, BRITTLENESS, SQUISHINESS, etc. Record descriptions in data table Use this to help you determine if it is “ionic” or “not ionic”

8 Test #2: Water Solubility Test
Add a part of a spoonful of each substances to a beaker to see if it dissolves! Record results in data table Use this to help you determine if it is “ionic” or “not ionic”

9 Test #3: Conductivity Test
Using the sample from the Water Solubility Test, measure the conductivity of the substance Listen to directions from the teacher on how to set up the circuit Look closely at the light bulb to see if it lights up Use this to help you determine if it is “ionic” or “not ionic”

10 EXPECTATIONS Speak only loud enough so that only your group can hear you Do not move on to the next station until I say to Follow all lab safety procedures Neglecting to follow any directions will result in book work. Reading pgs 220. Chapter Questions 1-20

11 Let’s go over your results…
Physical Analysis Water Solubility Test Conductivity Test

12 Element symbols Subscript numbers
What do you notice about the formulas for the compounds you worked with?? Element symbols Subscript numbers What do you think these subscript numbers correspond to?

13 Add in formula stuff if we get to it…

14 Exit Question Did all the tests prove or disprove whether or not a substance was ionic or not? Mr. Jhaveri wants to see if a new energy drink will help his muscles get even bigger. The energy drink has potassium chloride and sodium chloride in it. It also conducts electricity. Is the drink ionic? Why or why not?
