CHART INSTRUCTIONS NEW WORLD COLONIZATION Land = Resources = Wealth = Power You will label each column with information for the three European nations we have been discussing. 1. Spain, 2. England, 3. France For each nation list the following categories and include a picture for each category on the back of the page Colonization Method: what type of settlements did they build RESOURCE: this is what will gain them wealth GOAL: what are they trying to accomplish IMPORTANT PEOPLE: significant people during this time period

The French come to the New World: Resource: furs Settlements: trading posts and forts Goal: To find a Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean (waterways are their main transportation) Looking for the mouth of the MS River, La Salle is blown off course to Texas Founded Ft. The French in Louisiana and in Texas pose a threat to Spanish land claims Spain’s goal was to convert the natives to Christianity Spain agrees to build a mission to convert Caddo Indians on Father Massanet’s request. Many Natives did not want to change their lifestyles/religion. Why do you think early colonizers made a favorable report about E. Texas? Spain expected that the Caddoes friendliness and trade network would spread Catholicism

13 NAMES IMPORTANT TO COLONIZATION OF TEXAS
The mission San Francisco de los Tejas is established Close to present day Nacogdoches. Nacogdoches in Texas and Natchitoches in Louisiana are on the same parallel. Spanish Priests rely on French leadership to help because Spain (headquartered in Mexico City) refuses him help read the Texas tidbit on pg 122.

SPANISH COLONIZATION Margil de Jesus is priest among the Ramon expedition that establishes Los Adaes as an eastern outpost to keep watch over French Louisiana “eyes and ears of Texas” 1718 San Antonio is established as a mid-point settlement between the Rio Grande and the Sabine Rivers at San Antonio River.
