TYPES of English Colonies
1. PROPRIETARY…was land granted to an individual or group by the British crown and that were allowed full rights of self-government. 2. CHARTER… was land chartered to an individual or group by the British crown and that were allowed to establish a charter or set of laws that governed the colony for the benefit of England. 3. ROYAL… land administered by a royal governor and council appointed by the British crown, and having are representative assembly elected by the people.

*Roanoke Known as “The Lost Colony”
-The 1st English attempt at settlement in America off the coast of N. Carolina. -Began as a Proprietary colony for Walter Raleigh from Queen Elizabeth in 1585. -After dropping off settlers for a second time, they didn’t receive supplies from England for 3 years due to the war with Spain. -With Gov. John White’s return after 3 years, the colony had mysteriously disappeared. Known as “The Lost Colony”
