Status of Management No change. The CIS CAA team is mainly composed of : Iannis Dandouras: CIS PI and CAA scientific correspondent Henri Rème: CIS Co-PI Alain Barthe: Software engineer (CAA contract) CAA software and data processing Since July 2009 in part-time employment for CAA (3 days/week) Emmanuel Penou: Software engineer; Graphics visualization tool (cl) Other contributions : Sylvain Brunato: Operations and webmaster of Lynn Kistler: CIS-1 (CODIF) calibrations and cross-cal activities (UNH, USA) Chris Mouikis: CIS-1 (CODIF) special products (UNH, USA) Adrian Blagau: CIS-2 (HIA) calibrations and cross-cal activities (Institute for Space Sciences, Bucharest)

4 Overview of Instrument Calibration Status: CODIF
New CODIF Calibrations, by Lynn Kistler (March 2015): Changes to SC4 O+ and He+ HS and LS “absolute efficiency”. Changes to SC3 O+ and He+ HS “absolute efficiency” SC4 absolute efficiency checks (no change to SC4 H+ absolute efficiency for ) Changes to SC4 H+ and O+ anode efficiencies SC4 He+ anode efficiencies Comparisons with Van Allen Probes / HOPE measurements Calibrations are now updated up to January 2014 CODIF in-flight calibration articles, by Kistler et al., and by Mouikis et al. in the G.I. special issue.

5 Overview of Instrument Calibration Status: CODIF
Start/Stop and single position efficiencies all show very stable behavior since the MCP HV increase in 2009. The observations are consistent with no change. Stop eff. Start eff. Single Position eff.

6 Overview of Instrument Calibration Status: CODIF
Pressure Balance Checks Pressure balance in the plasma sheet still looks very good through the end of 2013. Plasma Pressure Mag. Pressure Total Pressure

7 Overview of Instrument Calibration Status: CODIF
CODIF Cluster 1, 3 and 4 total H+ efficiencies evolution, normalised to the start of the mission.

8 Overview of Instrument Calibration Status: CODIF
Oxygen Efficiencies Decided to assume that the O+ efficiency change tracks the H+ efficiency change. Note that that was approximately true in the early mission, when the O+ beams were used. Revised efficiencies shown with dotted line.

9 Overview of Instrument Calibration Status: HIA
New HIA Calibrations, by Adrian Blagau (October 2015): HIA - HS side calibrations for November November 2014. Comparisons with WHISPER plasma density. For the data after the results show very stable efficiencies for the operating HIA sensor (C1, HS - side). HIA in-flight calibration article, by Blagau et al., at the G.I. special issue.

10 Overview of Instrument Calibration Status: HIA
2013 2012 2013 2014 Evolution of the HIA calibration factors for the Cluster 1 HS side for , with respect to the 2011 efficiencies.

11 Calibration Status – Consistency between instruments
CODIF-HIA densities and velocities comparisons: Example of average densities and velocities in the plasma sheet from CODIF, on Cluster 4, and from HIA on Cluster 1 and Cluster 3: Consistent average values.

12 Calibration Status – Consistency between instruments
Known inconsistencies between CODIF and HIA data: CODIF Vz on Cluster 3, particularly after February 2003: one MCP deficient quadrant. Described in UG and tracked in the quality indexes. Magnetospheric region – CIS mode missmatches. Described in UG and tracked in the quality indexes. Plasma outside the energy domain of an instrument. Described in UG. User Guide includes recommendation on the best choice between CODIF and HIA.

13 Calibration Status – Comparison with other instruments
Cross-calibration: RBSP / Cluster-CODIF: H+ Conjunction j ( 1/cm2-s-sr-keV)

14 Calibration Status – Comparison with other instruments
Cross-calibration: RBSP / Cluster-CODIF: O+ Conjunction j ( 1/cm2-s-sr-keV)

15 Calibration Status – Comparison with other instruments
HIA - Whisper density cross-calibration in the magnetosheath: Example of a 2012 event, used in fine-tuning HIA calibrations.

16 Overview of Data Production Pipelines and Deliveries
CODIF data: All calibrated data, up to December 2014, have been delivered. All calibrated 1D and 3D ion distributions, from the beginning of the mission up to December 2013, have been reprocessed with the most recent calibrations and redelivered. Ion moments and pitch angle distributions, from the beginning of the mission up to December 2013, have been reprocessed with the most recent calibrations and redelivered. All Level-1 CODIF data have been reprocessed (tracking of missed TM packets). HIA data: All calibrated data, up to December 2013, have been delivered. 2014 data will be processed and delivered (2014 HIA calibrations received recently). Earlier years will be reprocessed. All Level-1 HIA data have been reprocessed (tracking of missed TM packets).

17 Overview of Data Production Pipelines and Deliveries
CODIF data quality indexes: New data product: All CODIF data quality indexes, up to Dec. 2014, have been generated and delivered. HIA data quality indexes : All HIA data quality indexes, up to Dec. 2014, have been generated and delivered. Include reprocessing and redelivery of earlier HIA data quality indexes. What these improved, newly delivered CIS quality indexes take into account: Limitations related to operation incidents or scheduled special operations (cf. UG). Limitations related to the sampling of the ion distributions (cf. UG). They do not include yet limitations related to a magnetospheric region - CIS mode mismatch. These will be included when a CAA Cluster magnetospheric regions dataset will become available. CIS data caveats: Updated CODIF and HIA data caveats have been generated and delivered.

18 Overview of Data Production Pipelines and Deliveries:
CODIF Data Quality index example Post-acceleration HV discharges CODIF quality index In each CIS data quality record, in addition to the four data quality indices a CIS-specific flag (caveats_key) is also included. This flag is an ASCII string that refers to the type of caveat that affects the quality of the data (cf. UG)

19 Overview of Data Production Pipelines and Deliveries:
HIA Data Quality index example Mode change transient HIA quality index Inadequate Counting statistics In each CIS data quality record, in addition to the four data quality indices a CIS-specific flag (caveats_key) is also included. This flag is an ASCII string that refers to the type of caveat that affects the quality of the data (cf. UG)

20 Overview of Data Production Pipelines and Deliveries:

23 Status of Instrument Products – Required Redeliveries
As indicated previously, all HIA datasets will need reprocessing and redelivery: updated calibrations Correction of the effects of a bug in the onboard software that randomly generates a one spin number shifting in the HIA telemetry data. CODIF He+ datasets also to be reprocessed (fine tuning of He+ calibrations in UNH). CIS data quality indexes will need reprocessing when a CAA Cluster magnetospheric regions dataset becomes available.

24 Summary of Problems and Open Issues
Reprocessing of HIA data (cf. previous slide) Reprocessing of CIS data quality indexes when a CAA Cluster magnetospheric regions dataset becomes available (cf. previous slide)

25 Instrument Calibration Plan for 2016
Continuation of the CODIF and HIA calibration activities to include the 2015 data. However: Both instruments have very stable efficiencies in the recent years. Only CODIF on C4 and HIA-HS on C1 are still operating.

26 Data Production Plan for 2016
CODIF 2015 data processing and delivery HIA 2014 and 2015 data processing and delivery Reprocessing of the earlier HIA data Updates in the CIS data quality indexes.
