Strong/Weak Mayor Council/Commission Manager/Administrator DD – overview of different types and experiences with each – building the case to show professional management is a good thing

Powers of Mayor Member of Police Commission
Chief representative of the Town before all State, Federal and other local governmental bodies Act as City Manager during the pendency of any vacancy in the position Upon confirmation by the Council, shall appoint members to all city boards, commissions and committees Veto DD

Appoint City Attorney, City Manager and City Clerk Receive from the City Manager recommendations for hiring and discharging all department heads. Establish salaries and other compensation Exercise direct supervision and control over the City Manager Deal with or issue orders or requests to town employees only through the City Manager, except in the case of formal inquiries or investigations. The Attitudes: The attitudes of the individuals also shape their perspective Elected Official Attitudes Staff Attitudes I will start off by asking Diane to share her’s as an elected official who hasn’t ever been staff. Then each of us will share some attitudes we have encountered – the goal is to share the bad attitudes so that we can show how solutions can change this

Breakout Session What are your issues and solutions?
JG will outline how the breakout session will work to the group. (depending on number we will divide the group into smaller groups to discuss among themselves unique problems they have encountered on this subject – and unique solutions that have been employed. Each group will then share the top 1 or 2 with the rest of the group. We will then comment or offer suggestions. Breakout Session
