the EU Bioenergy sector
Fanny Pomme Langue Policy Director at the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM) March 21st, ‘Value of Wood Forum’, International Day of Forests
3
Bioenergy is part of the EU bioeconomy
Bioenergy: a modern and innovative sector With data from:
4
Final energy consumption of bioenergy in 2014 was 110 Mtoe,
double that of 2000; 60.5% of EU renewable energy consumption in 2014; Half of the 20% EU renewable energy target in 2020.
5
Biomass: a big player within renewables but still a smaller provider than fossil fuels.
6
Bioenergy consumed in Europe is 95% local.

Bioenergy: a modern and innovative sector
8
Can bioenergy be innovative?
9
Bioenergy can create synergies with high-tech sectors.
Bioenergy runs the cooling system of a modern data center in Luxembourg, with considerable CO2 savings.
10
Bioenergy is part of modern, smart households.
Bioenergy substitutes old fossil fuel boilers with modern appliances in smart homes (domotics).
11
Bioenergy gives back to local communities & their forests.
In Serra (Spain), 130 hectares of forest have been protected from forest fires last year by harvesting wood residues & transforming them into quality biomass for power. This led to new jobs, huge electricity savings and re-investments in sustainable forest management.
12
One sector, multiple technologies
13
Yes, bioenergy can be innovative!
