Professor Amos E. Neyhart started his experimental Driver Training classes in the State College High School from Driver education teacher salary $112/mo. Taught without credit and after school. In 1936, Neyhart taught the first college course offered in the US for teachers of Driver Education. Dr. Amos Neyhart

Driver Education in the 1940’s
In 1947, Pennsylvania Act 475 enabled schools to start Driver Education and to purchase insurance. In 1948 standards for teacher certification were adopted. Teachers in driver education were given emergency certificates to teach.

ADTSEA in the 1950’s ADTSEA was founded in 1957 by Dr. Norman Key.
The first ADTSEA conference was held in 1957 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The first ADTSEA President was Robert Marshall from Missouri. There were 140 attendees at the conference. Robert Marshall

Driver Education in the 1960’s
In 1969, the National Commission on Safety Education created standards for driver education. Dr. Norman Key was the Executive Director from He was the focal point of pulling driver education together and creating standards for driver education and teacher preparation. He later won a Kaywood Award.

Richard Kaywood Professor of driver and traffic safety education in ’s. Early member of ADTSEA who served the Association and traffic safety education for many years. Assisted with the development of ADTSEA’s official journal “The Journal of Traffic Safety Education.” In 1984 Richard Kaywood passed away. In 1985 and each year after an award is presented in memory of Richard Kaywood.

ADTSEA in the 1970’s and 80’s Executive Director: Bill Cushman ( ) In 1970 began managing the National Student Safety Program (NSSP). 1985 Bill Cushman won the first Kaywood Award. 1986 Dr. Norman Key won the second Kaywood Award. ADTSEA in the 1990’s In 1994, Allen Robinson, professor, became CEO of ADTSEA. The Indiana University of Pennsylvania contracted with ADTSEA to provide management services. The ADTSEA Curriculum 1.0 was developed. Allen Robinson

Teacher Excellence Award (TEA)
Beginning in 1999, the ADTSEA TEA in honor of Dr. Francis Kenel is awarded. 1999 Robin Bordner won the first TEA award Followed by Duane Mettler in 2000, Chuck Fillippini in 2001, Lindsay Townsend in 2002 and Debbie Cottonware in 2003. Frank Kenel
