Rosie The Riveter- Produced by war production propaganda to try to get women to go work in factories
Rosie is strong but pretty- showing women can be both!
3.5 million women worked by 1944
Women also served as nurses and telephone operators

9. Mexican-Americans
Zoot Suit Riots- Mexican youth dressed in this style (loose pants, striped jackets).
Some off duty white sailors attacked the “zooters”.
Led to lot of tension between whites/Mexican-Americans
Bracero Program- U.S. government program to bring farm workers from Mexico to work on American farms while whites were away at war.

Race Riots- Race riot happened in Detroit and 25 African Americans died.
Frustration at fighting a war but not treated equal at home
Tuskegee Airmen- 1st ever African American airforce pilots.
Double “V” campaign- African Americans were fighting enemies abroad and fighting racism here at home.
They hoped WWII would lead to more civil rights.
