What was the event that sparked the war? 2) What was the reason Wilson gave to entering into WWI? 3) Explain Nationalism and how it unifies a people through a drawing or series of drawings. 4) Create a mnemonic device to remember the Neutrality Acts of 1935, 36, 37, 39 and the Lend-Lease Act.

Warm up 4/5 Continued Watch the video clip and answer the following questions 1) What propaganda techniques do you see being used? 2) Give two specific examples from the clip of the techniques 3) How convinced to support the war do the American people seem to be? 4) If you were lived in America during WWII and saw this, how convinced would you be to support the war? 5) What events (give me two), past or present, did this clip remind you of? (wars, propaganda, society, politics, etc.)

1) Why does Roosevelt say it was obvious that the attack on Pearl Harbor was planned? 4) How does FDR’s declaration of war speech compare to Wilson’s declaration of war speech? 2) Why might FDR have chosen to include the other Japanese attacks on non-American lands? 5) What other times, past or present, has an attack on the American people driven the country to war? 3) Why would FDR choose to include the line “The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.”? 6) How have these attacks, past or present, changed American society?

Women Rosie The Riveter- Produced by war production propaganda to try to get women to go work in factories Rosie is strong but pretty- showing women can be both! 3.5 million women worked by 1944 Women also served as nurses and telephone operators

Impact on this group? Positive More women working and enlisted in the army– they were allowed jobs except combat.

Mexican-Americans Zoot Suit Riots- Mexican youth dressed in this style (loose pants, striped jackets). Some off duty white sailors attacked the “zooters”. Led to lot of tension between whites/Mexican-Americans Bracero Program- U.S. government program to bring farm workers from Mexico to work on American farms while whites were away at war.

African Americans Race Riots- Race riot happened in Detroit and 25 African Americans died. Frustration at fighting a war but not treated equal at home Tuskegee Airmen- 1st ever African American airforce pilots. Double “V” campaign- African Americans were fighting enemies abroad and fighting racism here at home. They hoped WWII would lead to more civil rights.

Japanese Americans Executive Order 9066- created internment camps
Japanese Americans were forced to move to in the interest of national security Interment Camps- Temporary Prisons Korematsu v. United States- Supreme court ruled that Internment camps were ok because they were protecting national security.
