Types of Poems: A NARRATIVE POEM tells a story.
An EPIC POEM is a type of long narrative poem that has a HERO and often FANTASTICAL CREATURES. A LYRIC POEM expresses THOUGHTS and FEELINGS. A CONCRETE POEM forms a shape on the page.

Poems have lines and stanzas (paragraphs).
Let them be as flowers, always watered, fed, guarded, admired, but harnessed to a pot of dirt. I’d rather be a tall, ugly weed, 5 clinging on cliffs, like an eagle wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.

Read the poem four times:
1.) For enjoyment - don’t worry about understanding 2.) For mood and meaning- What is happening, what’s the mood? Figurative language 3.) For structure- rhyme scheme, word position, line length, etc. 4.) For the whole picture- put all the above together

Sensory details are words that appeal to your 5 senses:
Sight Hearing Taste Touch Smell

Mood = How the reader feels while reading Tone = How the author feels about the subject

Graphical elements Visual features of a poem that can influence the meaning. Examples- line length, capital letters, word position

Questions to ask while reading...
*Identify sensory imagery *What TYPE of poem is it? *What’s the mood? What’s the tone? *What happens in the poem? *Who is\are the speaker(s)? *Is there any figurative language?
