3 Viceroy Curzon He read for a classical degree at Oxford and soon became the leading tory undergraduate of his day Curzon struck his Oxford contemporaries as a man destined for a major political career Most people were impressed by his wit, his eloquence, and his hard work, but others found him too verbose and self-assured. Acquaintances discerned an air of superiority that inspired those lines which journalists quoted against him for the rest of his life: ‘My name is George Nathaniel Curzon, I am a most superior person. My cheek is pink, my hair is sleek, I dine at Blenheim once a week.’ Viceroy for two successive terms: and It’s the 2nd term that ruined his reputation and that of the British government in India

5 Curzon Curzon tried to be high handed and partition Bengal – the heartland of the INC – in order to try and neutralise Congress There is an outcry from the Hindus and Muslims begin to express concerns too When the Liberal government take power in 1906 they are faced with the problems of his legacy – they attempt to diffuse it by cancelling partition (a success for India) and the Morley-Minto reforms (beginnings of representative government)
