Rush-Bagot Agreement: Limited naval power on the Great Lakes for both the U.S. and British Canada Convention of 1818: Set the border between the U.S. and Canada at 49◦ as far west as the Rocky Mountains. Both countries would occupy the Pacific Northwest together (fur trade and natural resources) Both countries would get fishing rights off of Newfoundland

U.S. supported Latin American countries struggling for independence U.S. was worried about interference by European counties with newly independent countries, such as Mexico U.S. did not want to be involved with more wars U.S. and Britain wanted to preserve trading relationships with Latin American countries The doctrine is still important to U.S. foreign policy

Many states were entering the union BUT – there was a growing discontent in the North about slavery To be or not to be – that is the question. Should Missouri be a slave state or not? There are 11 free states and 11 slave states What are the consequences if it goes one way or the other?

Missouri Compromise Missouri applied to enter the union as a slave state which would change the balance between free and slave states Henry Clay

Maine would join the Union as a free state, keeping this number of slave states and free states equal. Slavery would be prohibited in any new territories or states formed north of 36* 30’ latitude – Missouri’s southern border.
