INTRODUCTION This presentation briefly describes the Zambian Seismic Network (ZSN), seismicity in Zambia and upgrading of seismic stations. Zambia has been involved in the monitoring of seismological activities since the 1950s when it started operation of the Zambian Seismic Network (ZSN) which had its node at Broken Hill (Kabwe). This network has undergone three major phases in its digitization processes from the single analog component stations to the current three components

2. BACKGROUND ZAMBIAN SEISMIC NETWORK
Setting up of the network composed of: Lusaka (Kapopo) main station (LSZ); 6C, 3SP-ZNS and 3LP-ZNS Lennartz Electronics Ink-Drum (LE-ID) Recording S-13 Teledyne Geotech (TG) SP seismometers L-210/211 TG LP seismometers Isoka (IKZ); 1C-SPZ, LE-ID recording, S-13 TG-SPZ seismometer. Mansa (MZZ); 1C-SPZ, LE-ID recording, S-13 TG-SPZ seismometer. Kasempa (KMZ); 1C-SPZ, LE-ID recording, S-13 TG-SPZ seismometer. Petauke (PTZ); 1C-SPZ, LE-ID recording, S-13 TG-SPZ seismometer. Choma (CHMZ); 1C-SPZ, LE-ID recording, S-13 TG-SPZ seismometer. Network set between 1983 and 1985 Stations installed at Meteorological stations Network set up in collaboration with Institute of Seismology, University of Helsinki, Finland with FINNIDA funding.

3. UPGRADING OF LUSAKA SEISMIC STATION
Funded by FINNIDA and carried out in collaboration with the Finnish Institute of Seismology, University of Helsinki. Involved the installation of a radio telemetry link between Lusaka station and the Analysis Centre for seismic data transmission. Carried out in 1994. In 1994 the Lusaka seismic station was upgraded to a VBB digital IRIS seismic station. Telemetry link improved to handle large quantities of digital data by installation of Cylink 128 Radio Modems.

UPGRADE-2: Remote Stations
All the remote stations were upgraded from 1C(Z) analogue stations to 3C(ZNE) digital stations. This project was funded by JICA in 1988/1999. Replaced the 1C(Z) Teledyne Geotech seismometers with 3C(ZNE) Lennartz Electronics seismometers.

UPGRADE-3: AFRICAARAY STATIONS
The upgrade involves the setting up of new four seismic stations by AfricaArray (MONG, TEZI, KTWE & KSMZ)

ZAMBIAN SEISMIC NETWORK LUSAKA SEISMIC STATION, KAPOPO VILLAGE UPGRADES OF AS-119 TO IMS STANDARDS
These upgrades pertain to the upgrading of the Lusaka main seismic station (AS-119) and the National Data Centre (N-192) to IMS standards for the purposes of participating in the global monitoring of the CTBT. Zambia signed the Treaty in and has also ratified. These are indications of government’s commitment and support for the CTBT.

5. SEISMOLOGICAL SET UP OF ZAMBIA
The seismotectonic set up of Zambia is composed of a general earthquake faulting pattern related to the East African Rift System and extends on the component called the southern-western branch
15
The structural patterns of the East Africa Rift system can be shown as seen in the figure below:
