Aim: How do we classify real numbers?
2
What types of numbers were listed?
Whole Numbers Integers Square Roots Fractions Decimals Irrational
3
Classifying Real Numbers
In the Real Number System, there are two sets of numbers, Rational & Irrational. Rational Numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a fraction (a/b where a & b are integers.) When written as a decimal, these numbers terminate or have a repeating pattern. Irrational Numbers are numbers that cannot be expressed as a fraction. These decimals are nonterminating & have no pattern. Non perfect squares are irrational.
4
Subsets of Rational Numbers
Integers are positive & negative whole numbers (including zero) (… -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, …) Whole Numbers are the set of counting numbers and zero. (0, 1, 2, 3, …) Natural (Counting) Numbers are the set of positive whole numbers. (1, 2, 3, …)

Ex. 1 – Which of the following number sets does -12/4 belong?
I. Integers II. Whole Numbers III. Rational Numbers IV. Real Numbers a. I only b. I, III & IV c. I & IV only d. All of the above

Now let’s go back to those numbers you gave me before & classify them!
