7. HEFCE’s Green OA requirements
All journal articles and published conference proceedings (with ISSN) must be Green (if not Gold) … books excluded
Since 1st April 2016 – upload AAM within 3 months of acceptance for REF 2020 eligibility
Also maximum embargoes on accessibility to full-text apply – 12 months for STEM
24 months for AHSS
Embargo can be in place during REF exercise
Applies to both corresponding and co-authors
Books excluded for Ref purposes but may be able to add individual chapters to Pure

Aston Research Explorer is the public portal for discovering information about research publications.
It also details information on research staff, awards and activities, projects and research groups.
Information does not appear on Aston Research Explorer unless it is in PURE.
Keep your profile and research information up to date!

15. Adding a full-text article to PURE
Click on ‘browse’ to find the file for upload or drag the file to the box
Select the correct document version:
- Green this will be ‘Accepted Author Manuscript’ (peer reviewed version) - Gold this will be ‘Final Published version’ (Publisher PDF / Version of record)
For Green OA - if you are unsure of the embargo date the library will check this and complete it for you
For Gold OA - the license type will usually be ‘CC-BY’ aka
‘Creative Commons: Attribution’
Make sure you press SAVE when you exit or your work will be lost!
