1 How are the children? -how Minneapolis Public Schools is striving to collaboratively change how we serve students- Ceci

2 Outcomes for today- Learn by Doing
Objective: To better understand purpose and utility of Learning Walks and how they can advance student learning from the Principal Supervisor Perspective. Learning Target: I can provide meaningful feedback and input in a collaborative workspace. Ron and Ceci Open with “the compelling why” diffusion of effort at central office…...LW were with no purpose- we wanted to bring the walks back to the school improvement plan- -additional or more purposeful learning target With the work as principal supervisors supported by New Leaders we were able to focus…... As a Principal Supervisor how you can use this process for your principals.

3 Norms Speak your truth in a respectful manner Monitor your airtime
Assume positive intentions Be engaged Everyone has an opportunity to participate Keep students at the center Ceci Metacognition- you should always have norms- Present as if we are teaching the TL team Demonstrating how we presented to others

4 Purpose Provide input and engage in reflective conversation on how to support the implementation of the academic priorities. Ron More purpose- the flower As a district we declared these academic priorities Feedback Cece slides 1-4

5 Laura How are the children really doing in our schools? How do we know?

6 Sentence- Phrase- Word
As the video is playing, silently read the passage to yourself. As you read, highlight three aspects: A SENTENCE that really resonated with you A PHRASE that really resonated with you A WORD Once all members of your triad have completed the task, you will go around the circle and one person share the sentence along with their rational. Continue around the circle until all members have shared their sentence. Then begin again with the phrase and a third round with the word. After all three have shared each element, open conversations can occur. Laura

7 Text Based Protocols Way to structure a conversation to make sure all members of the group get a voice and all members get heard. National School Reform Faculty site: Laura Reasons for Text Based Protocols: Ensure equal voice Structure to conversation Accountability Time Efficiency Focus

8 Giving Feedback How have you provided feedback that initiated change and how do you know? When and how have you received feedback and what was the result? How has this process impacted student outcomes and how do you know? Lucilla As principal supervisors- we did fishbowl feedback with principals as Principal Supervisors were watching to provide feedback- We worked with AIR(American Institute of Research) - this year to pilot providing feedback to the principal on their feedback with teachers Two circles back to back

9 How we will be providing feedback
The learning walk is a tool to use to provide you with feedback. The purpose of a learning walk is: Monitor implementation of district academic priorities Provide feedback and coaching to school leaders Identify support to advance the academic priorities Lucilla

10 MPS Academic Priorities
Ron

11 How are the academic priorities “showing up” in your school?
Individually write down “look fors” for each of the 4 academic priorities Partner with another principal supervisor or administrator of a similar “grade banded” school (K-5, K-8, Middle Schools, High Schools) and share and discuss commonalities between lists Ron The way we entered into the conversation with the principals was to collaboratively create “look fors” with the princpals. This created a list of items we could include. Following that, the academic departments revised the “look fors” and added to to ensure alignment.

12 Learning Walk Template with the look fors
Laura As a principal supervisor it is important that we look for the “indicators for success”- not about the tool Didn’t need another presentation about school improvement Distribute the tool now and share examples of how it was used…
