1 Innovation and RNP Panel “Innovation in the Balance” TERENA Networking Conference, June Maastricht, Netherlands Michael Stanton RNP – Brazil’s NREN 1

2 Participated in the launch of commodity Internet between 1994 and 1998
RNP: What? When? Why? RNP runs the Brazilian NREN, and was created in 1989 as a government project for higher education and research Operates Brazil’s first national IP backbone since 1992, with connectivity to global networks Participated in the launch of commodity Internet between 1994 and 1998 In 1999 recreated as a non-profit company with R&E support role, now supported by ministries Edu, S&T, Health, Culture Currently serves around 900 campi of about 400 institutions all over Brazil – more than 2M users (1% of population) Need to continually reinvent itself to meet fresh challenges New users / new technologies / new applications

3 Examples of innovative activities
Building own optical infrastructure Metro networks in more than 30 cities (redecomep) Long-distance networks Experimentation and production use Developing services with ideas from R&D community (Dani Brauner’s talk here on Monday) ID management: certification, federation Media services (audio/video/remote teaching aids) Low-cost WiFi Webconferencing for PCs, phones and tablets 4K and 4K-3D video technology (codec, player) for digital cinema and medical applications User-friendly dynamic circuit provisioning

4 RNP Identity Federation:
ID management RNP Identity Federation: Web Single Sign On (Web SSO) - Shibboleth Member of eduGAIN More info: (BR-PT) RNP R&E PKI: Low-cost HSM (Hardware Security Module) More info: (BR-PT) GIdLAB – Identity Management Laboratory Sandbox for Brazilian IdM researchers More info: (BR-PT)

5 Media services for distance education
– Efficient distribution of Interactive Classes (BR-PT)

6 Low cost Wifi Management System
GT-SCIFI - Intelligent Control System for Wireless Networks An open-source platform for managing multiple APs in a low-cost wifi network More info: (BR-PT)

7 Webconferencing Mconf - Multiconferencing System for interoperable Web and Mobile Devices Create a webconferencing system based on open-source software, with the capacity to interoperate between computers and web-enabled mobile devices. More info:

8 FOGO Player – 4K Video Player
Digital Cinema FOGO Player – 4K Video Player Develop a video player to play videos in high ultra video resolutions (4K). 1st live uncompressed 4K surgery streamed over academic network in Brazil: 4,5 Gbps.

9 Medical applications GT-MDA – Arthron Med
Develop a solution to manage and transmit multiple video flows from cameras and medical devices. View from a telemedicine room User Interface Manipulation of 3D models using Kinect

10 Dynamic circuit provisioning
MEICAN – User-friendly Interface for Dynamic Circuit Provisioning

11 Increase in international collaborations
Formal international collaborations (since) Internet2 (2000), Dante (2003) , RedCLARA (2003), AmLight (2005), GLIF (2008), CineGrid (2009), GENI (2010) FIBRE (Future Internet) project (approved in joint EU-BR call) (2011) CEO Forum (2012) Active informal participation: TNC (2010), FI-Asia (2011), APAN (2012), UbuntuNet (2012)

12 Innovation and its importance
What? developing better services for our users, in collaboration with national research community Why? Facilitate national and international collaboration of our R&E users Strengthen links with R&D community Collaborate with advanced networks globally Maintain competitive advantage over commercial alternatives (in Brazil)
