RNP runs the Brazilian NREN, and was created in 1989 as a government project for higher education and research
Operates Brazil’s first national IP backbone since 1992, with connectivity to global networks

In 1999 recreated as a non-profit company with R&E support role, now supported by ministries Edu, S&T, Health, Culture
Currently serves around 900 campi of about 400 institutions all over Brazil – more than 2M users (1% of population)
