1 Common Core State Standards for Math
September 14, 2011

2 Design and Organization
Standards for Mathematical Practice Carry across all grade levels Describe habits of mind of a mathematically expert student Standards for Mathematical Content K-8 standards presented by grade level Domains: Number and Operations Counting and Cardinality Operations and Algebraic Thinking Number and Operations in Base Ten Number and Operations—Fractions Measurement and Data Geometry 2 2

3 Standards for Mathematical Practices
“The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education” (CCSS, 2010). Carry across all grade levels Describe habits of a mathematically expert student The Common Core proposes a set of Mathematical Practices that all teachers should develop in their students. These practices are similar to the mathematical processes that NCTM addresses in the Process Standards in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. These can implemented between now and time content goes into effect.

4 Standards for Mathematical Practices
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Carry across all grade levels Describe habits of a mathematically expert student The Common Core proposes a set of Mathematical Practices that all teachers should develop in their students. These practices are similar to the mathematical processes that NCTM addresses in the Process Standards in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. These can implemented between now and time content goes into effect.

5 Exploring the Standards for Mathematical Practice
Number 1-8. Move to your group. Read the assigned Standard for Mathematical Practice. Try to explain each practice in your own words. Each group should create a poster about the practice.

6 Standards for Mathematical Practice
Key words or phrases Picture Examples

7 Standards for Mathematical Practices
First three words of each practice: Mathematically proficient students . . .

8 Mathematical Practices
List the actions of a mathematically proficient student Brainstorm: Ways teachers can facilitate the outcomes of mathematically proficient students Reflect: What are my actions as a teacher to help ensure students become mathematically proficient? Add ideas to poster Mathematically Proficient Students. . .

9 Standards for Mathematical Practices
Gallery Walk Dot Activity I do this now I haven’t thought about this Need more guidance on this What are the implications of these mathematical practices?

10 NC Teacher Evaluation Process
Standard I: Teachers Demonstrate Leadership Standard II: Teachers Establish a Respectful Environment for a Diverse Population of Students Standard III: Teachers Know the Content They Teach Standard IV: Teachers Facilitate Learning for Their Students Standard V: Teachers Reflect on Their Practice

11 Standards for Mathematical Practices
Standard IV: Teachers Facilitate Learning for Their Students Teacher know the ways in which learning takes place, and they know the appropriate levels of intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of their students. Teacher plan instruction appropriate for their students Teachers use a variety of instructional methods Teacher integrate and utilize technology in their instruction. Teachers help student develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills Teachers help students work in teams and develop leadership qualities. Teachers communicate effectively. Teachers use a variety of methods to assess what each student has learned.

What are the Mathematical Practices in this lesson?
