Matt. 13:24-30 Parable: something thrown alongside Tares: plants that look like wheat but aren’t Similar to parable of the sower but different Explanation of both after purpose for parables Both emphasize individuality Other parables are collective effects of kingdom Sower: same seed, different soils Tares: same soil, different seed

The Parable of the Tares Explained
Matt. 13:36-43 Jesus is the sower of good seed The field is the world (not the church) The devil sowed the tares Good seeds are sons of the kingdom Tares are the sons of the devil Harvest is end of the world Angels are the reapers Have to live among wickedness but not partake

The Parable of the Tares Misapplied
“The church is not to exercise corrective discipline” Jesus says it is Matt. 18:15-20 Consistent with 1 Cor. 5:9-13 We are not to judge the tares those who are outside That is God’s place We are to judge those on the inside v.12 On moral, public issues of the impenitent 2 Thess. 3:6-15, Matt. 18:17 Only after love, patience, and warnings
